David is secretary of peak industry body the WA Midwest Yilgarn Infrastructure Group www.myig.com.au representing crucial industry sectors

The Sustainable Forest Industries Roundtable (formed in 2022 with David Utting as convener), was in response to the WA Government’s shock ban on sustainable harvesting of regrowth forests in September 2021.

Even government departments and agencies were not informed of this political decision which was done to appease green members of the Labor Party and stop Labor votes from leaking to the Greens.

SFIR represents the hundreds of secondary industries and small, mostly family  businesses, reliant on sustainably harvested hardwood timbers from WA’s south-west forests, including furniture manufacturers, wood-craftspeople and artisans, firewood suppliers, landscaping and playground businesses, the horticulture industry, the heritage building restoration sector, animal and poultry bedding suppliers and wood heater manufacturers.

Logging in old growth forests was banned in 2001 and the new logging ban just kills off a sustainable industry which has operated on a sustainable basis for over a century. Indeed we are calling for regrowth areas to be harvested on a 200 year cycle which continues WA’s position as one of the most sustainable forest industries in the world.
